Do Your Hiking Shoes Fit Correctly?
Having shoes that fit correctly when hiking is very important because of the stress that is put on your feet. It is important to make sure that the hiking shoes are snug, but not too tight, and that the toes have room to wiggle. There are a few things that can be done in order to make sure hiking boots fit correctly when purchasing them. Because your feet tend to swell during the day, it’s a good idea to try on shoes either toward the end of the day or right after you exercise. Wearing the same socks and orthotics that will be worn with the shoes while hiking is also key in order to make sure you understand how the shoes will fit under those conditions. Shoes should also have a proper width to give the toes enough space, and there should also be enough space between the edge of the toes and the edge of the shoe. If you are unsure that your shoes fit properly, it’s suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can examine your feet and offer expert advice.
It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Kirk Sherris from Liberty Bay Foot & Ankle. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.
Proper Shoe Fitting
Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.
Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting
- Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
- Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
- Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
- Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
- Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot
The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

Topical Treatments for Toenail Fungus
Onychomycosis, more commonly known as toenail fungus, is an infection of the toenails. There are a variety of treatment options available to clear up the fungus, including oral antifungal medications, topical ointments, and laser therapy. While oral antifungals are considered to be very effective, they are not the right treatment option for everyone. Oral antifungals can cause unwanted side effects and may interact with other drugs that you are taking. Topical treatments are applied directly to the nail. Recent advances in topical medications have made them more effective than they once were, with new formulas having more success penetrating the nail bed to cure the fungus. To learn more about topical treatments for toenail fungus, please consult with a podiatrist.
If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Kirk Sherris of Liberty Bay Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Symptoms
- Warped or oddly shaped nails
- Yellowish nails
- Loose/separated nail
- Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
- Brittle, broken, thickened nail
Treatment
If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.
Prevention
In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.
In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.

How to Avoid the Pain of Ingrown Toenails
You probably have an ingrown toenail if the side of your toe turns red and sore and begins to swell. The main cause of this condition is that the nail pushes into the skin surrounding it and takes hold. One cause is wearing shoes that fit improperly, allowing little room in the toe box for your toes to move. Another cause is cutting toenails improperly. Nails that are rounded or trimmed down at the corners are at risk of becoming ingrown. The first way to avoid ingrown toenails is to cut your nails straight across. Second, try not to pick at your toenails or tear them off at the corners. Third, avoid wearing high heels with pointy toes and shoes that constrict your feet. If the affected toe swells and becomes filled with fluid or pus, it is likely infected. It is a good idea to seek immediate help from a podiatrist who can drain the area and treat it properly. If recurring ingrown toenails are a problem, it may be wise to make regular foot care appointments.
Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Dr. Kirk Sherris of Liberty Bay Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.
Causes
- Bacterial infections
- Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
- Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
- Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
- Genetic predisposition
Prevention
Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.
Treatment
Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

Multiple Sclerosis and Hot Feet
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks and destroys otherwise healthy nerve cell linings in the brain and spinal cord. This impairs nerve function and causes symptoms throughout the body – including in the feet. Many people who have MS suffer from dysesthesia, or abnormal sensations in the skin. When dysesthesia affects the feet, you may experience symptoms ranging from a mild itching or burning sensation or pins and needles, to a severe feeling of the feet “being on fire” or “electrically shocked.” Despite any sensations of heat, the feet themselves will remain cool to the touch. This is because the burning sensations are caused by impaired nervous system functioning. Fortunately, there are things you can do to relieve pain, such as wearing special pressure socks. If you have MS, a podiatrist can help you manage your foot health.
Neuropathy
Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with Dr. Kirk Sherris from Liberty Bay Foot & Ankle. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.
What Is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.
Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:
- Numbness
- Sensation loss
- Prickling and tingling sensations
- Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
- Muscle weakness
Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.
Treatment
To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.
Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.
